I'd like to talk about free markets. Information in the computer age is the last genuine free market left on earth except those free markets where indigenous people are still surviving. And that's basically becoming limited.

In the government schools, which are referred to as public schools, Indian policy has been instituted there, and its a policy where they do not encourage, in fact, discourage, critical thinking and the creation of ideas and public education.

"Indian policy" has now been brought down upon the American people, and the American people are the new Indians of the 21st Century.

Let me go to Clinton's new proposal: to have uniforms in public schools. And people are doing that. How come they're doing that? Dress codes! I find that abhorrent.

So Indian policy has become institutionalized and the result has been that American people have become more dependent on government and that the American people have become more dependent on corporations.

Young people and Indian people need to know that we existed in the 20th Century. We need to know who our heroes are and to know what we have done and accomplished in this century other than what Olympic athletes Jim Thorpe and Billy Mills have done.

Trivia

Due to his heavy involvement in the American Indian Movement (AIM), Means is often erroneously credited as being a founding member of AIM. Means was actually an early leader of the organization, not a founding member.

Means admits that the Disney cartoon movie of Pochahontas was one of the best movies that has ever been created about Indian people in Hollywood. This is due to the fact that the story contained no stereotypes of American Indians and respected them as a people not an image.

Means' only novel written to date is Where White Men Fear to Tread, which he co-authored with Marvin J. Wolf. It is currently in it's seventh printing.

Co-founded and helped build the Porcupine Health Clinic in 1986. Located on the Pine Ridge Reservation, the Porcupine Health Clinic was the first independent American Indinan health clinic located in the United States.

In 1987, Means became the first American Indian to run for the candidacy for the office of the President of the United States. He sought the nomination through the Libertarian Party, but lost the nomination to a former Congressman Ron Paul.

In 1993, Means became the first American Indian to have a single card casting credit before the title of a movie, for Windrunner.

His speech "For America to Live Europe Must Die" given at the 1980 Black Hills International Survival Gathering has been recognized as one of "America's Top 100 Speeches".
