The Basket
Film adaptation of street tough Jim Carroll's epistle about his kaleidoscopic free fall into the harrowing world of drug addiction. As a member of a seemingly unbeatable high school basketball squad, Jim's life centers around the basketball court and the court becomes a metaphor for the world in his mind. A best friend who is dying of leukemia, a coach ("Swifty") who takes unacceptable liberties with the boys on his team, teenage sexual angst, and an unhealthy appetite for heroin -- all of these begin to encroach on young Jim's dream of becoming a basketball star. Soon, the dark streets of New York become a refuge from his mother's mounting concern for her son. He can't go home and his only escape from the reality of the streets is heroin for which he steals, robs and prostitutes himself. Only with the help of Reggie, an older neighborhood friend with whom Jim "picked up a game" now and then, is he able to begin the long journey back to sanity.

Denny Traynor has the idyllic life a loving wife and family, a flourishing career. Seems like life is perfect until some policemen from another break into their home one night and arrest him for a twenty year old murder. Initially, Denny denies the accusations made against him but when evidence is presented that implicates him, he is then extradited to stand trial. When his wife, whose faith has been shaken asks him what happened, he tells her that he did kill the man they said he killed but in self-defense. However, when there is no evidence that supports his claim, his wife wonders if he has told her the truth, and if she should continue to support him.

His research into this plant culminates in his writing The Emperor Wears No Clothes: The Official Hemp Bible. He has dedicated his life to educating people about the history and many utilizations of hemp, the conspiracy against it, and ending marijuana prohibition.

When two small-town deputy sheriffs (Kyle MacLachlan, Wade Williams) stumble onto a crime scene where a drug buy had gone bad and everyone was shot dead, they discover a suitcase full of cash - $1.5 million. They decide to take the cash and cover-up the theft by burning the car the cash was in. However, things take a turn for the worse when they discover that one of the men is still alive and he has overheard their plans. They then have to suffocate him to stop him from revealing their plans. Things get even worse though when the DEA shows up and tell them that the man was one of their agents and he was wired. And then things take another bad turn when the coroner (Miguel Sandoval), who first received the body, discovers the tape first, switches it and wants a 50% cut. Peter Coyote is the sheriff and a manipulative, controlling husband. His wife (Amy Locane) is having an affair with MacLachlan, who wants the money to help the two escape.

Anna Kalman is an accomplished actress who has given up hope at finding the man of her dreams. She is in the middle of taking off her face cream (one of the best scenes), while talking about this subject with her sister, when in walks Philip Adams. She loses her concentration for a moment as she realizes that this is the charming, smart, and handsome man she has been waiting for. The plot thickens as they begin a love at first sight relationship and she finds out that he has been keeping a secret from her. When she learns of his lie, she becomes furious and works out a plan for revenge.

In 1836, two prisoners (Kristofferson, Bairstow) escape from a Louisiana chain gang run by a vicious strong boss. In the process of the escape, the strong boss is killed which sets his brother, the ex-warden (Victor Rivers) on a chase of the men. However, the two join up with Sam Houston's army to fight the Mexicans which also sets them free from previous charges. The ex-warden then sells guns to the Mexicans which leads to the Alamo massacre and the death of their friend, Jim Bowie. The two then lead the avenging charge at San Jacinto that settles the war.
