New York City homicide detective Vincent LaMarca has forged a long and distinguished career in law enforcement, making a name for himself as a man intensely committed to his work. But on his latest case, the stakes are higher for Vincent--the suspect he's investigating is his own son. He and Joey have been painfully estranged ever since Vincent divorced his wife and left the decaying boardwalks of Long Beach, Long Island for the anonymity of Manhattan and a successful career with the NYPD. A filming of a live stage performance. When Sweeney Todd (an alias) returns after a escaping from an Australian prison, he is told that his wife has died and his daughter has been raised by the judge who framed him. Mad with grief, he vows to rescue his daughter and take revenge upon the judge who took away his love. Opening up a barber shop, he plots to kill the judge when he comes for a shave. In the meantime, he murders his customers as they sit in his chair. Sweeney's new friend Mrs. Lovett, who just happens to own a meat pie shop downstairs, has thought of a perfect way to dispose of the evidence.

David Mamet takes this story of thieves along many twists and turns, some of which work and some of which don't. Gene Hackman plays the brilliant leader of a gang (Delroy Lindo, Ricky Jay & Rebecca Pigeon as Hackman's youngish wife), which pulls off complex heists for a despicable fence (Danny DeVito). After stiffing the gang on a jewelry robbery, DeVito forces the gang to go after a Swiss gold shipment and to use his nephew (Sam Rockwell) in the crime. No one trusts anyone and every step is shaded with the unexpected.
