Natalie: (About her very first meet) I remember, I think it was my first meet, I entered the 25 fly. I couldn't even get my arms out of the water, and I got DQ'ed. I don't know what evil official would DQ a 6-year-old, but it was a little discouraging.
Natalie: The pressure is hard and some times it is not fair. No matter what I do, I can't meet everybody's expectations. And the celebrity — it can be a pain. But there is the other side to all this attention, too. I guess it means I must be doing something right.
Natalie plans to swim at the 2008 summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
Natalie majored in psychology.
Natalie graduated from Carondelet High School in Concord, California.
At the Olympic Games in 2004, Natalie earned two golds in the 100m backstroke, setting an Olympic record, and in the 800m freestyle, setting a world record. She also won a silver in the 400 meter free, earning her an American record, and a bronze in the 100m free.
At the World Championships in 2003, Natalie earned a gold in the 400m free and a silver in the 400m medley relay.
Natalie earned two ESPY award nominations for Best Female Collegiate Athlete and Best Record-Breaking Performance.
Natalie won 2 gold, 2 silver, and 1 bronze medal at the 2004 summer Olympics in Athens, Greece.
By her junior year in college, Natalie had won every national honor available in American swimming.
Natalie suffered from a shoulder injury in 1999.
