Pearl, la madre ? giovane ed attraente, ma sconfitta dalla vita (? rimasta incinta al primo rapporto amoroso ed ha dato addio ai sogni per dedicarsi ai figli). Marty, il padre ? assente perch? occupato nella ditta di televisori in cui lavora (tutti vogliono vedere lo sbarco sulla Luna). Un giorno arriva al campo un affascinante venditore di vestitini e cianfrusaglie : per Pearl ? il colpo di fulmine. Vive un'intensa storia d'amore e di passione, culminata nella fuga a Woodstock, dove ? corsa anche Alison con il suo primo ragazzo. Durante il concerto la ragazzina scorge la madre con l'amante e fugge. E' una esperienza difficile da capire. Il padre torna al campo e, venuto a conoscenza di tutto, cerca di rimettere a posto i pezzi di un difficile puzzle. An academic obsessed with "roadside attractions" and his tv-star daughter finally discover the world's largest ice cream cone, the centerpiece for an old gold-rush town struggling to stay on the map. They end up staying longer than expected because of an accident that spilled an unknown cola ingredient all over the highway. They spend the next few days with the various residents of the town which include a teenage girl who loves to blow things up and a boy trying to keep alive his fathers dream of building a beachside resort in the middle of the desert.
