Besides his humorous newspaper columns, Grizzard also performed a stand-up comedy act.

When Grizzard underwent a heart operation in 1993 he credited the prayers of his fans for helping him pull through.

During his later years, Grizzard resided in the exclusive Ansley Park section of Atlanta.

Today there is a Lewis Grizzard Museum in his hometown of Moreland, GA which has artifacts and memorabilia from his life. There is also memorabilia about novelist Erskine Caldwell, who also hailed from Moreland, in the museum.

One of Grizzard's most controversial columns was about God calling up the Reverend Jimmy Swaggart and telling him he was fired. Many newspapers refused to carry it.
