Trivia

Charles Dodgson kept his identity as Lewis Carroll quite separate from his everyday life as a teacher and parish priest. Until he died in 1898, few people connected the retired Oxford don with the world-famous children's author.

His longest poem is The Hunting of the Snark: An Agony in Eight Fits (1876).

His academic works include A Syllabus of Plane Algebraical Geometry (1860), The Formulae of Plane Trigonometry (1861), A Guide to the Mathematical Student (1864), The Dynamics of a Particle (1865), An Elementary Treatise on Determinants (1867), and The Fifth Book of Euclid Treated Algebraically (1868).

Apart from his children's books and his poetry, Lewis Carroll also wrote works of scholarship under his own name, C.L. Dodgson. In 1879 he published a play called Euclid and His Modern Rivals, set in Hell, with the Infernal Judges passing judgment on the current theories of geometry.

He went to Richmond School, in North Yorkshire, then to Rugby School (1846-49) and finally to Christ Church, Oxford, where he took a first class honours degree in Mathematics in 1854. He then spent twenty-five years at Oxford as a college tutor and lecturer.

Lewis Carroll was the pen-name of the Reverend Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and is a play on his first two names. Lewis is the English form of the French name Louis, Latin Ludovicus, Old English Lutwidge, while Carroll is an Irish surname from the Latin name Carolus, which became Charles in French and English.
