Jill Sobule Quotes & Trivia

Quotes

About her cover of "Stoned Soul Picnic": This is a song off of a Laura Nyro tribute album. I secretly love the 5th Dimension's version. And what does "Can you surry" mean?

About "I Kissed a Girl": My "K-Tel" moment. It was the first song "of that type" to reach the top 20. It was banned on several southern stations. I thought that was swell.

Jill: (After being asked about her storytelling talent) I think it was because I've always been a kind of a voyeur when I was a kid. I was kind of a loner, so I was a watcher instead of leader or a follower, so maybe it comes from there. My favorite book when I was a kid was Harriet The Spy. It was this book about this weird little girl who would spy on people and write down observations. So maybe it comes from there. Plus, I've always been such a reader. I think the songs are short stories.

Jill: (On "I Kissed a Girl") That song was a double-edged sword for me. It was perceived as a novelty hit, but on the other hand it was the first song with an overtly gay topic to be aired on Top 40 radio. I am quite proud of that.

Jill: (On performing) When I'm performing, I try to not be distant from the audience. I try to, like, bring them in, like they're playing in my living room, and that's why I'm always trying to talk to them between songs."

Trivia

When she was in the junior high school band, Jill didn't know how to read music and played everything by ear.

Jill has done background vocals on Jim Boggia's two albums ("Fidelity is the Enemy" and "Safe in Sound"). She sang on "Nothing Wrong with Me" on "Fidelity..." and "Made Me So Happy" on "Safe in Sound."

Jill once worked at the shoe department at Barney's (and her boss there was depicted in the 1995 song "Karen By Night"), where she sold shoes to Cher and Barbara Streisand.

Jill's "I Kissed A Girl" was banned on some southern radio stations when it was first released.

Jill's 1995 self-titled album was originally released without the track "Supermodel" on it. After the movie "Clueless" released, it was added as the tenth track to the album and reissued. The only places to find the "Supermodel"-less album, if you are lucky, are used music stores and, possibly, eBay.

Currently lives in Los Angeles, California.

Previous jobs Jill has tried her hand at include wedding photography and serving cocktails.

Jill's songs have been featured on such shows as "Crossing Jordan" and movies such as "Clueless," "The Truth About Cats & Dogs," and "Mind The Gap."
