After graduation from Howard University, Hattie became a member of the Group Theatre Workshop in New York.

Hattie has recieved two Obie Awards for her roles in Mother Courage and The Michigan.

In 2006 Hattie was part of a reading of Slave Narratives: A Mighty, Might People for Stories On Stage. Stories On Stage are a non-profit organization for performing arts who present popular local and national actors in dramatic readings of short fiction.

In 1990 Hattie and her husband remade Langston Hughes Black Nativity, with help from Phylicia Rashad and James Stovall. The off-Broadway production was entitled Nativity: A Life Story.

Hattie was honoured by the University of Louisville in Kentucky with a dedication for the library's Hattie Winston Collection. The collection was established in 1998 and contains over 250 scripts, books and theater memorabilia, most of which she donated. The collection contains work from writers such as Naomi Carrier, Alice Childress, and Paul Harrison Carter.

Hattie has been recognized by the National Black Theater Festival in North Carolina, who have declared a Hattie Winston Day, once in 1993 and once in 1997.
