George played "Fairy Godfather" to an Italian family in Lake Como, Italy. George has a home there, and made friends with a family that lived next door. He decidd to renovate their home for them. They are staying at his home while the work is being done. Whe asked "why?", he simply said that they were excellent people that deserved a nice place to bring friends and family to.

George donated his bag of Oscar goodies to an auction to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Katrina, citing that he has no need for the expensive gifts. The gift, which include a Tahitian Pearl necklace and a Kay Unger Kimono were auctioned for the United Way Hurricane Response & Relief Recovery Fund.

George and Warner Bros are being sued by French screenwriter Stephanie Vergniault over allegations that Syriana was copied.
