According to Butch Vig, the band picked the name Garbage prior to Shirley Manson joining them. At the time, Duke Erikson, Steve Marker, and Butch were making some guitar riffs and electronics for the song 'Vow'. Supposedly, guest producer Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails) called the noise 'Garbage' several times, which they decided to name their band.
