Joe Cardos, a death row inmate in some unidentified country, is to face the gallows in the morning for strangling three women. Filled with bitterness at the world, and perhaps himself, Joe lashes out at the warden and guards' attempts at making his final hours a little easier, and refuses to see either his sister or the prison chaplain. However, Joe does change his mind about being granted a last request, one the prison is obligated by law to fulfill: He asks for a woman's company so he can have some "fun" in the time that's left. After asking around, two police detectives show up at the prison with a down-on-her-luck former "waitress" named Dora, who earlier that night had tried to drown herself. Dora, totally broke and feeling she has nothing to lose, has agreed to spend the night with Joe in his cell. As she sees it, the money she's being offered should be enough for "a decent funeral."

Spanning 18 years in an Iranian women's prison, this follows two women: the new prison warden, a tough as nails devout Muslim who has served in the army on the Iraqi front, and a young midwife, Mitra, who is serving her sentence for killing her mother's abusive husband. In the early years, Mitra is repeatedly punished as the warden tries to break her. This includes punishment for delivering a baby in the prison cell while all of the prison staff has taken shelter during an Iraqi bombing. The warden's attitude starts to change after 8 years, when Mitra tries to protect a new inmate from rape at the hands of her older cellmates. When the baby comes back in 1991 as a 17 year old delinquent, Sepideh, the warden respects Mitra enough to protect the girl.

In New York, Alvin Sanders is a small-time thief who's just been hauled in for stealing a bunch of prawns (shrimp) from a local restaurant. He ends up in a cell with John Jaster, one half of a high-tech criminal team that's just stolen $42,000,000 worth of gold from the Federal Reserve. Realizing that he could die at any moment from his worsening heart condition, Jaster tells Alvin to relay a cryptic message to his wife about the whereabouts of the hidden gold. Alvin doesn't know exactly what the message means, and Edgar Clenteen, the U.S. Treasury investigator working the case, hopes it will lead to the gold or Jaster's partner Bristol, but it does neither. Eighteen months later, Jaster is dead, and both Clenteen and Bristol are still looking for that gold. Clenteen decides to secretly plant a tracking device in Alvin's jaw, release him from prison, and then let the word out that he knows where the gold is hidden. Knowing that Bristol is probably watching their every move, Clenteen hopes Alvin will act as the bait that'll lure Bristol in. To the dismay of Clenteen and his colleagues, agents Wooly, Blum, Boyle, and Walsh, who are tracking Alvin's every word and move, Alvin immediately gets into trouble, although he decides to go straight once he learns that while he was in prison, his girlfriend Lisa Hill gave birth to their son. Even so, run-ins with his criminal brother, Stevie Sanders and Stevie's two partners, Ramundo and Julio, puts Alvin in danger of being locked up again, which threatens to mess up Clenteen's plan. What will happen when Alvin realizes that he's being used as bait to nail Bristol?

When Ann's husband Chris takes his own life after losing his Beverly Hills job, she vows revenge on the man who fired her husband and on the woman who got the vice presidency Chris wanted. Ann deals with the firm's owner in a flash in a very quick and noisy 'accident', but she takes her time with the new V.P., Nicole Garrett, a diabetic with a rocky marriage to Scott, a lawyer who drinks too much and with two kids: Darla, a rebellious senior in high school who wants more freedom; and David, a son who'll soon be visiting from college. The Garrett's household also includes Karina, an Au pair. After murdering Karina and hiding the body, Ann charms her way into the Garrett household, as 'Anna Johnson' where she sets about widening the riff between Nicole and Scott, while encouraging the self-destructive Darla to go all the way with a prospective boyfriend, and seducing both Scott and the naive David. 'Anna' also slowly begins to poison Nicole by switching her insulin with a slow acting poison. Will anyone wise up to Ann before her clever and complex revenge plan is complete? Or, is it already too late?

Another of the "Fate and Irony" films from director-writer-producer-actor Hugo Hass but this one has less hair-shirt torment than most of his offerings, although his camera, as usual, lingers provocatively on the contours of the leading lady and, in this case, the leading lady is more than well-contured. Mary Adams (the well-contured Cleo Moore) works in a tawdry waterfront restuarant where the owner not only maltreats her, he also cheated her father out of a fortune years ago. The owner acquires $25,000 in an illegal transaction, which Mary promptly steals, hides, confesses her crime and serves a short sentence. Freed, she goes to work in a restaurant owned by Dragomie Damitrod (Hugo Hass) and when he gets into trouble over a gambling debt she offers to help him by telling him where the $25,000 is hidden and she will loan him the amount he needs. But circumstances indicate that he has stolen all of the money and she clouts him on the head with a whiskey bottle, apparently killing him. She then learns that he didn't steal the money, digs it up and donates it to an orphanage and then surrenders to the police where she learns that Damitrod is not dead. Well,dang. But all is not lost as she seems to be heading for matrimony with fisherman Johnny (Glenn Langan), who has been hanging around romancing her at her various jobs between jail stints.
