Blind Melon decided upon the name of their band when Brad Smith said "What's happening, Blind Melons?" Brad got this phrase from his father. Brad's father used to ask his neighbors this question because there was about ten of them all living in one house. These neighbors were considered to be hippies and were all poor. The image of this seemed to fit the band. Before they chose "Blind Melon", they thought of calling themselves "Gristie," "Frog," "Mud Bird," "Naked Pilgrims," "Brown Cow," and "Head Train."
