Summer people in Maine: things are changing. Whales no longer pass close to the shore as they did during the youth of two elderly widowed sisters who have a seaside home where they've summered for 50 years. Libby is blind, contrary, and seemingly getting ready to die. Sarah is attentive to her sister, worried about continuing to care for her, and half interested in an old Russian aristocrat who fishes from their shore. It's the eve of Sarah's 46th wedding anniversary. The Russian offers some fish he's caught, Sarah invites him to dinner, and Libby gets her back up. Sarah wonders if it isn't time to sell the place and find a home for Libby. What alternatives do old people have?

The plot centers around a large area of land owned by an old black lady, Elvira Backus. It had been given to her by her one time employer and secret father of her two children, a southern patriarch. Discovering oil on the afore mentioned property, the patriarch's family tries to regain the land by destroying the deed and denying it ever existed. Coming to Elvira Backus's aid is attorney Willie Croft. He attempts to get back Elvira's land and leads the movie to it's eventual court scene.

Christian Gilbranson, Miss Marple's lawyer, persuades her to visit the baronial estate of his step-mother, Carrie Louise Serrocold, an old friend of Marple's. Carrie Louise's devoted husband Lewis has turned the manor house into a halfway house for young men with criminal records and has hopes of expanding the facilities. He confides to Miss Marple that he suspects that someone is slowly poisoning Carrie Louise with arsenic. One of the young charges, Edgar Lawson, claims to be Lewis' illegitimate child and wants his alleged father to acknowledge him. While they are arguing behind closed doors a gun is discharged, and the visiting Gilbranson is found murdered in another room. It is up to Miss Marple to aid crusty Inspector Curry discover the murderer's and poisoner's identities.

Miniature Dwyer is named after her mother, who was making miniature doll houses when Minnie was born. Minnie, too, has built doll houses for years, and when she learns that she is terminally ill, she and her husband Teddy begin planning their joint suicide. She is subjected to a hearing, where her blurred responses prompt the judge to put her in a nursing home, and she begins to deteriorate. However, her granddaughter who loves her rouses her back to life and helps her learn how to live again.
