In 1984, Barbara and two of her children were involved in a horrific accident in which the driver of the other car was killed. Though her children were unhurt, Barbara suffered extensive injuries. She had a severe head injury (which required several days in intensive care), a broken right leg, a broken right ankle, a damaged right knee and numerous cuts and bruises. Her rehabilitation lasted nearly 18 months.

Among Barbara's many awards are two consecutive reigns as CMA's "Entertainer of the Year" (1980, 1981), two "Female Vocalist of the Year" awards (1979, 1981), nine "People's Choice" awards for "Favorite Female Country Music Vocalist", the "Living Legend Award" given only to entertainers who have been in the business at least 25 years, the "Tex Ritter Award", and a Grammy award for "Best Inspirational Album of the Year".
